Mike
Carruthers:
Do you think it's easy for happy people to be so happy?
Greg Hicks:
The people that we talked to would say that happiness is hard
work - that you have to work at it every day.
Greg Hicks co-author
of the book How
We Choose To Be Happy, talked with three hundred people
who describe themselves as truly happy.
They are so committed
to living a joyful life rather than being seduced into the negativity
that is around us, that they just work hard every day at making
sure they're experiencing as much joy as possible.
And Greg says
it's interesting how happy people deal with the tough times.
These people
feel their feelings - so if they feel sad they really let themselves
feel the sadness. That's one of the things that's interesting
about this - to be truly happy sometimes you have to be truly
sad. These people aren't always chipper, you know that's not
very realistic. So the first step is feel their feelings; the
second step is "What am I learning about this that can
help my life in the future?; and the third step is "What
are the new opportunities available to me?"
Although being
happy appears to be hard work, it does have great rewards…
like more enhanced
immune response to a vaccine, faster healing after surgery,
even longer life after being diagnosed with a terminal illness.
