Building Up Your Self-Confidence
Interview with Tim Ursiny, author
of
The Confidence Plan
|
Mike
Carruthers:
What's the difference between self-confidence and self-esteem?
Tim Ursiny:
Self -worth or self-esteem is when I take my ideal of what someone
should be and I compare myself to it. Confidence is more my
belief that I can build that up to match, to get to that point
where I feel satisfied where I am.
Tim Ursiny, author
of the book The
Confidence Plan, says one way to be more confident is to
avoid avoiding things.
Avoidance drains
confidence versus facing it. Let's say that you're asked in
the workplace, "We need you to do a presentation"
and you're afraid of it, you think about failing in front of
that group so you find some way to weasel out of the presentation.
Well, the next time that you're asked to do a presentation your
fears are now greater because every time we avoid something
the fear just builds, then finally, it almost feels impossible
to face it.
And the people
you surround yourself with have a huge impact on your self-confidence.
It can be very
direct - it could be the person who put you down, or the person
that controls you, or the person that just suddenly passive
aggressively demeans you or it can just be the person that is
negative. Even if that negativity isn't addressed towards you,
imagine the last time you walked into a room where people were
having an argument, where a team was having a fight or an argument,
you can feel that, your body feels that when you walk in. So,
even if the negativity isn't directed at you it can still impact
your confidence and drain you of energy.
