Mike
Carruthers:
You've
no doubt heard that if you have a family history of heart disease,
you're more likely to get heart disease, however…
Joel Fuhrman
M.D. :
The idea that this is a genetic problem really is not
accurate - nutrition overwhelms genetics.
Family physician
Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of the book Cholesterol
Protection for Life, says it's simply not true that there
are people who need drugs to lower their cholesterol, but many
who have tried low fat diets have failed to get their cholesterol
down.
That's mostly
because these people are put on diet programs like the American
Heart Association's standard low fat- advice, which has been
shown in the medical literature to be completely ineffective;
it only lowers LDL cholesterol 6%. So, when they're put on these
diets that have been proven to be ineffective and proven to
allow the advancement of heart disease, of course then we're
going to say, "It must be genetic" and have to be
thrown on drugs.
I've looked at
Dr. Fuhrman's nutritional plan and it is a dramatic departure
from the typical American diet - it contains virtually no animal
products and is primarily fruits and vegetables. But his research
shows that eating this way has amazing results.
And I'm suggesting
that we can marry healthy eating, great tasting food, pleasure
in life and not just reduce the risk of heart attack - but feel
better, have more energy, sleep better, maintain our youthful
vigor in our later years and enjoy our life more free of the
medical tragedies that plague most Americans in their later
years.
