Carruthers:
In many a workplace today, there is a fundamental problem.
Alan Gregerman:
People now expect that their organizations simply want them
to do what's in their job description - to get all of the stuff
out of their in-box and then they're allowed to go home.
Dr. Alan Gregerman,
author of the book Surrounded
by Geniuses…
So the leaders
of organizations think of themselves as the ones who come up
with new ideas as opposed to thinking that the folks who are
at the front lines of dealing with people could have, if encouraged
in the right way, do absolutely brilliant things.
Even if your
boss doesn't get it, there is a lot you can do to stand out
all by yourself.
Imagine that
I simply decide, even if my bosses are difficult, that I've
figured out a better way to serve our customer and to make that
customer have a much stronger connection to our organization.
Then imagine that that customer contacts our organization and
says, "John or Sue truly helped us to be more successful."
Suddenly I would imagine that opposed to the boss saying, "You
idiot, that was outside of the way we normally do business,"
I have a funny feeling that most bosses would suddenly say,
"You know you might be on to something, maybe I should
have paid more attention to you."
And it can be
little things that make a big difference to a client or customer.
Whether that
means responding faster, whether it means just reaching out
and saying, "I actually really care about you, and your
concern is the first thing that I'm going to address."
all of us have the chance to kind of delight the folks that
we serve.
