What's
Wrong In Business Today
Interview
with Dave Anderson author of the book, Up
Your Business!
Mike
Carruthers:
There's a climate in many businesses and organizations today
that is causing an epidemic of mediocrity.
Dave
Anderson:
Well the world has gotten so politically correct
it just waters leaders down and their afraid to tell it like
it is anymore.
Dave Anderson
author of the book, Up
Your Business!
They
sugarcoat they don't give honest feedback, they dance all around
the topic rather than really sitting down with someone and saying,
"Hey, this is not working out, lets talk about how we can
turn this around and get you back on the right track."
I see a real reluctance to confront people in that manner today
and it starts to debilitate the culture.
A big problem
Dave sees in many organizations is the hiring of employees.
You know,
I think we really need to get better at hiring slow and firing
fast. In other words very often in business we hire recklessly,
we get into this panic mode, we wait til we're backed into a
corner, now we have to hurry up and hire somebody to fill some
holes and man we lower the bar just so we can plug those holes.
And we pay for that mistake over and over and over again, we've
got to get better at getting the right people on board first.
Because
you can't have a great organization if you have mediocre people.
You know,
I think you can only be excellent in an area where you're talented.
And we have some people in slots in business today who are just
not wired for the work, they're just a bad fit. And so can't
teach talent you can only draw it out, you can't put it in if
it's not there. And so it's getting the right people who are
wired for the work, it's starting with that and then drawing
that out of them.
Tomorrow
how any organization can attract quality workers. I'm Mike Carruthers
and that's Something You Should Know.
