Staying Young When You Get Old II
Interview
with Henry Lodge, M.D. author of Younger
Next Year

Mike Carruthers:
Statistically, we live longer today than ever. In fact you
might say some of us live too long.
Henry
Lodge, M.D.:
Americans now have far more longevity than they really
know what to do with. The vast majority of Americans outlive
their health by a good decade or so. So you don't get old and
die you get old and live.
Dr. Henry
Lodge, author of the book, Younger
Next Year says you can live healthfully well into you eighties
and nineties if you follow the prescription.
Our prescription
is you should exercise as you get older every day. We recommend
six days a week and give you that seventh day off. And people
stop right there and say well I can't do that. The reality is
that your other choice is to get old and that if you look at
it half an hour or forty-five minutes of exercise a day is a
minor investment in the last 20 to 30 years of your life.
But we've
all heard exercising three times a week is the key but Dr. Lodge
says the science does not support that.
If you're
going to conveniently die at 70 or 72, three times a week may
be all you need, but if you're like the average American and
going to live to 85 or as time goes on 90, three times a week
is going to be nowhere near enough to get you through those
last 15 years in style.
The other
parts of the prescription are eating right and being emotionally
connected to other people.
And plus
which it's fun living this lifestyle - which sounds difficult
at the outset, but you have more energy, more optimism, more
enthusiasm - the people who do this are having a great time.
