28, 2008 Interesting Facts About The Food You Eat Interview
with Matt Goulding, co-author of
Eat This Not That! | Mike
Carruthers: If you are trying to be healthier and you had to
choose between a Whopper and a Big Mac, which would you choose? Well, if you choose
the Big Mac… Matt
Goulding: You'll save yourself about 220 calories and 18 grams
of fat. Because a lot of people probably would guess the Big Mac is worse than
the Whopper. Matt
Goulding, co-author of the book
Eat This Not That!, says you should be wary of any food labeled healthy. A
perfect example is a bran muffin. Bran muffins, we've been taught, are a great
way to start our day - they're loaded with fiber and they're incredibly healthy.
And the truth be told is that a bran muffin usually has about 450 calories, very,
very little fiber, lots of sugar and in some cases lots of saturated fat. So
at Starbucks, for example, you might think you're being healthy by choosing the
bran muffin to go with your coffee… The
truth is, that actually is the worst choice. And the smarter one there is going
to be a black forest egg, ham and cheddar breakfast sandwich. It looks "melty"
and drippy and riddled with fat but it's only 320 calories. You've got Ruby Tuesday's
- there you'd be better off ordering a 7 ounce sirloin than you would be to order
a turkey burger. And
Matt says when you're shopping for cheese in the supermarket… We
advise people to look when they're buying cheese (sliced cheese in particular)
to buy Swiss cheese. It's usually lower in fat and it's almost always very, very
low in sodium than say more popular cheeses like a cheddar or a Monterey Jack.
