Mike Carruthers:
To improve and maintain your health, you know the important
things: stop smoking, exercise, eat right. But there are some
things you may not know, that science is now telling us, for example…
Michael
Roizen:
Get folate and vitamin D and take an aspirin a day if
your doctor says so.
Michael
Roizen M.D. and co-author of the book,
You: The Owners Manual…
Why folate
and vitamin D? You want 800 micrograms a day- 800 mcg of folate
a day- and 400 international units of vitamin D. If you get
those two alone, you probably will decrease your risk of cancer
by about 50%. Add an aspirin to it and you'll decrease it probably
60%.
Dr. Roizen
has conducted exhaustive research for the book and everything
he recommends is backed up by solid science. Another interesting
thing he discovered…
How good
coffee is for you, or caffeine. It decreases the risk of Alzheimer's
and Parkinson's disease.
And to
keep your brain healthy as you age…
The more
you exercise your brain, just like your muscles, you have to
do it at threshold. That is, you have to stimulate it to the
point where you get a little uncomfortable. For example if you
get lost and try and find your way back without using a GPS
system, you will in fact re-grow nervous connections that improve
your spatial, visual, spatial sense.
Tomorrow,
what really does and doesn't work against the common cold. I'm
Mike Carruthers and that's Something You Should Know.
