Mike
Carruthers:
When
people write emails, they communicate in one of four styles.
Steven Griffith:
There's a visual communicator that processes the world
by what they see so they use words like: see, look, view.
Steven Griffith,
author of the book
Email Power…
There's an auditory
communicator that takes in the world by how things sound, and
they use the words like: listen, hear, resonate. The kinetic
communicator takes the world by how it feels - they'll use words
like: feel, grasp, get in touch. And the digital communicator
processes and organizes the world by how it makes sense in their
head and they use words like: think, process, and understand.
When you begin
to notice how people communicate with you in email, you can
respond more effectively.
This is extremely
important when you get that email you want to evaluate, "Do
I have a visual communicator, do I have an auditory communicator?"
And then you want to respond with those words - that makes the
connection.
You can certainly
argue that important communication probably shouldn't be happening
through email - but it does.
And actually
I had a client that was negotiating a deal. He never spoke to
the CEO of this company - he hired me because the communication
was so challenging. And what was happening is they were communicating
in different styles - they weren't addressing each other's needs.
So, when I came in, I evaluated the emails he gave me and within
five emails he closed that deal - so it is happening daily.
