Secrets Of Persuasion
II
Interview
with Ruth Sherman author of the book, Get
Them To See It Your Way, Right away
Mike
Carruthers:
When you need to persuade someone of something, a friend,
a co-worker, even your boss…
Ruth
Sherman :
There is something very important that successful people
do, that's very persuasive and that is they project confidence.

Them To See It Your Way, Right Away.
You've probably
been in a situation where somebody comes up to me and they don't
make eye contact they give me a weak handshake, they're not
even smiling and I don't even want to be around that kind of
a person because it's just not attractive. But someone who comes
to me and projects confidence, I'm very interested in knowing
more about that person. So projecting confidence is key and
I would add, even if you don't feel it inside.
And how
do you project confidence if you don't feel it?
If we use
a purposeful stride, our posture is good, our handshake is firm,
our eye contact is direct and our smile is broad. That's going
to be a self fulfilling prophecy in a way it's going to make
us feel more confident.
And in many
situations one of the most persuasive techniques you can employ,
says Ruth, is the follow up.
I always
tell people to follow up within twenty-four hours. Send hand
written thank you notes. Do you know how unusual it is to get
a hand written thank you note anymore? That's impressive, it
makes you stand out from the crowd. These sound like little
things, like little common sense things that everybody knows,
but the fact is Mike, they're just not so common anymore.
