Are You Vunerable To Identity Theft?
Interview with Chris Harris,
CEO, One You Security www.oneyou.com
|
Mike
Carruthers:
Anyone can become a victim of identity theft through no fault
of their own. But a lot of people apparently don't believe that
according to one recent survey.
Chris Harris:
That said, eighty-eight percent of the population believe that
the people who have become victims of identity theft became
victims just because they were irresponsible with their information.
Chris Harris,
President and CEO of One You Security…
They weren't
shredding their documents or they gave out their personal information
to a rogue entity that they should not have. And the facts are
that's not the case at all.
A lot of identity
theft happens on the Internet where hackers steal credit card
numbers from company's computers.
And if you think
about it, your information has already been compromised - it's
in data bases and file cabinets everywhere. Over the past two
years over two hundred and twenty million credentials were breached,
over thirty million people were victims of ID fraud last year.
But surprisingly
a large amount of identity theft also occurs close to home.
The percentage
of identity thefts that occur from people within your own personal
network ( friends, even family and neighbors) - it's alarmingly
high (I think it's about a third) and so when you start to dissect
that, everyone is at risk.
