Mike
Carruthers:
One
huge problem in many relationships is…
Carol Allen:
People immediately go to their wounded ego when they
have a conflict with someone they love - they don't want to
be the bigger person because they're afraid of being a doormat.
Relationship
coach, Carol Allen…
People just get
in these power struggles and they can't come from a higher place.
And the thing that I get so excited about is: if one person
comes from a higher place - like doesn't come from wanting to
be the victor, but comes from wanting to be their partner's
best friend and wanting what's best for them both, then the
other person follows their lead and the good news is if just
one person changes, the whole thing changes.
At the heart
of every successful relationship, says Carol…
is that they
really be friends and that all great relationships are great
friendships. And so the first thing I tell people is: "Drop
the bad attitude." Because the thing we communicate with
the most is our attitude and then start being each other's friend
- start communicating with no criticism, no contempt. You can
still say everything you need to say without being critical,
without being contemptuous, without being disdainful. Start
bringing positive communication and a lot of appreciation, and
it's like a miracle.
