Mike
Carruthers:
It's tough sometimes to get started on a project you know you
really need to do…
Richard Fettke:
Fear gets in the way, lack of focus - you know I've talked
to one of my clients and he's talking about all these things that
he had to do and because there were so many things, it paralyzed
him.
Rich Fettke,
author of the book Extreme
Success…
So by just breaking
it down and just saying, "What's the one action, what's
that one step that will move you ahead? - even if it's fifteen
minutes." And setting up accountability with someone is
super powerful - having someone else who is going to hold you
accountable, to support you - that's a key too.
In his research,
Rich asked hundreds of people to answer two questions; "What
gets you going on a project and what keeps you going?"
And the "what
gets you going?" - it boiled down to two main things: 1)
an exciting future vision or contribution to others - making
a difference. And so getting clear on what it is that is the
vision, that is number one as far as is going to get you in
action - and then it's taking that first step.
It's very easy
to put off a project. Rich's advice…
Do today what
will bring joy tomorrow - if you need to kick back and go to
the beach or go fishing or relax - and you really take a look
and say, "When I wake up tomorrow morning will I think,
yes that is the best thing that I could have done for myself?"
Or will it have me wake up tomorrow feeling worse and feeling
more behind - and that's kind of a nice filter to put it through:
do today what brings joy tomorrow.
