Computer Safety
Interview
with Stephanie Sullivan, Avia Consulting
www.aviaconsulting.com/tips
Mike
Carruthers:
In order to keep your computer safe you probably already
have anti-virus software.
Stephanie
Sullivan:
We all know that anti-virus is part of the solution
but actually it's not enough by itself. Keeping your windows
software up to date can make a huge difference.
Stephanie
Sullivan with Avia Web Development a computer consulting and
web hosting company…
What I do
is I go onto the control panel of my computer and if I'm using
Windows XP it's on the little system applet down near the bottom
of the control panel or if it's Windows 2000 it's got it's own
automatic updates applet up near the top of the control panel.
And on there you can set up to make automatic updates happen.
And to keep
your computer safe you need to have a firewall.
There are
really three kinds of firewalls. The first and basic is built
into Windows 2000 or XP. A little more advanced is a software
firewall. An example of this is the zone alarm firewall, which
is made by zone labs. Zonelabs.com is where you can download
a free version of this.
The third
kind of firewall is a hard ware firewall.
These can
be as simple as a forty-nine dollar Internet broadband router.
These provide something called network address translation.
That by itself protects you from Internet hackers.
