Back To School
Interview
with Ron Clark author of the book, The
Excellent Eleven
Mike
Carruthers:
As kids head back to school this fall what can parents do
to ensure their kids do well this year?
Ron Clark:
Parents need to be enthusiastic in the home and show
their kids that learning is great.
Ron Clark
Disney's Teacher of The Year in 2001 author of the book The
Excellent Eleven…
So many
parents can be negative sometimes and say, "Oh you've got
10 days before school starts, so you better get ready for school,
this is going to be a tough year." Sometimes parents will
come up to me with their child and they'll say, "You know
what I'm really dreading this year because we've got this teacher
and I've heard she;s bad." And they're saying this in front
of their kids.
It's vital
that parents help their kids with their homework but Ron says
it's very important to be patient.
Because
the parents are always saying "It's like pulling teeth
to get him to do his homework." So I sit there and I watch
and after 5 minutes the parents are saying " Oh you know
this answer, "oh he knew this answer yesterday Mr. Clark."
And the parents get frustrated and their kids get frustrated.
If we want our kids to have patience if we want them to see
homework as a thing that's a positive thing then we have to
show them it's positive.
And as students
get older Ron says there's a tendency for parents to get less
involved with their kids schooling.
Parents
will say things to me like " I'm tired of going to that
school because no one ever says anything positive about my child."
All they want to do is call and say the negative things and
so as time goes on parents step away from the school environment.
But that's the wrong attitude to take, you know if something's
wrong in the school environment, you know get involved; find
out what's happening.
Tomorrow
addressing one of the big reasons kids hate school. I'm Mike
Carruthers and that's Something You Should Know.
