Mike Carruthers:
Back to school time means, for many parents, the kids are off
to college and out of the house. Which can bring on those feelings
that have come to be known as empty nest syndrome.
Dianne Sundby PhD:
It's not an official diagnosis, but, we see a lot of
it and it's quite a real thing.
Psychologist, Dr. Dianne Sundby, author of
the book, You
Know You're An Empty Nester When…
Some experience missing their kids terribly.
Some have made a lot of their identity to focus around the kids
and when the kids aren't there they're not sure what they should
be doing next. I think our current population of the baby boomer
group is highly invested in their kids. They've waited a while
to have their kids and that's why it's harder to let go of them
when the kids leave.
So, what do you do when you start feeling
empty nest syndrome?
Well, I think it's important that we recognize
that there is such a thing as empty nest syndrome, first of
all. That hey, you're not nuts, you're not different from everybody
else, because you're missing the kids, and you're a little bit
at odds or feeling sad. Then, on the other hand lets see what
else we can start doing. Taking some steps; don't go home and
crawl into bed and pull the covers over your head. Action is
a good way to deal with sadness or depression. Taking an action,
doing something, a physical activity, getting yourself engaged
mentally. Taking a class, getting involved with an activity,
read a book.
