September 8, 2006:
Your Remarkable Skin
Interview with David Leffell, M.D., author of Total Skin

Mike Carruthers:
We often take it for granted, but our skin is quite remarkable.

David Leffell M.D.:

The skin is designed to be our interface with the environment - so its biology allows it to repair itself in an amazing fashion.

Dermatologist Dr. David Leffell, author of the book Total Skin

The skin, if cut, will heal through a dramatic cascade of events. First your body will stop the bleeding, and then generate chemicals that will stimulate the re-growth of the top layer of the epidermis; and even healing of the second layer - the result of which is a scar.

Dr. Leffell says there are three things we need to do to keep our skin healthy.

Number one, protect yourself against the sun. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the number-one cause of premature damage to the skin. Number two, don't smoke. Smoking prematurely ages facial skin. And thirdly, if your skin gets dried out, make sure you moisturize it regularly because although it protects itself and retains its own moisture, it can sometimes use a little help from you.

And what is the biggest complaint people have about their skin?

Worldwide, probably the number-one complaint is itching, and itching can be caused by any number of causes, but most often is probably due just to dry skin and can be fixed with proper moisturization.
