Carruthers:
You say you want something in your life and you have trouble achieving
it. Well, perhaps the question should really be…
Jack Zufelt:
How bad do you want it? Is it a core desire or not? If it's
not a core desire (and that's on a scale from one to a hundred),
that's a hundred; if it's fifty on the scale, that's half-hearted
- half-hearted doesn't cut it in anything.
Jack Zufelt,
author of the book The
DNA of Success…
For example if
you want to exercise, you've got to carve out the time and discipline
yourself to do it every day or three times a week. If you decide
that's too hard, don't tell me you can't do it; don't tell me
that you don't have the skill or the ability, just say this:"I
guess I don't want it bad enough." I'll buy that. The human
being can learn. If a person can learn they can create whatever
they want because they can learn it from somebody. But, if they
don't want it bad enough they'll quit.
If you're honest
with yourself and others about your core desire, Jack says you'll
be much happier.
If you call me
tonight and say, "Hey Jack, you want to go bowling?"
On a scale from one to a hundred I instantly measure that -
and I like bowling but not tonight. I have something more important
so I'd say that's a sixty on the scale - I don't do sixties,
I don't do eighties, I don't do nineties - I'm clear now what
my hundreds are, I only do hundreds.
The fact is that
you'll almost always never succeed at anything just because
you should, could, or ought to.
"Ought tos"
"shoulds "and "need tos" don't have the
power to cause you to overcome the obstacles that will come
in your way because you're trying to make something happen.
