What Makes A Happy Family
Interview
with Richard Eyre author of the book, The
Happy Family
Mike
Carruthers:
There are several elements that can make family life more
content.
Richard
Eyre:
Every family has to have traditions and those traditions
have to be strong. They're like the mortar that holds the family
together.
Richard
Eyre author of the book The
Happy Family…
I think
the reason kids join gangs today its cause they love traditions
and colors and an identity larger than themselves. A family
can have that by having birthday traditions, holiday traditions
things that cause people to feel identity.
Another
important element to a happy family is your family history.
Now see
there's one people say, "Ah hey wait genealogy roots that's
for old people." Kids love to know about their grandparents
their great grandparents it gives them a sense of place a sense
of belonging. And even just a few little stories about where
they came from about their ancestor's gives them a sense of
who they are.
And Richard
says how a family manages time is critical.
One of
the problems today is that kids are more over-scheduled than
we are. One of the things we suggest in the book is you sit
down and with the kids and have a little meeting and say look
here are some things that I as your parent are willing to give
up so I have more time with you. What are some things you're
willing to give up? And what parents are finding is there are
the kids say "Hey I'll give that up I didn't like that
anyway." And they find out they're doing all this stuff
because every other kids doing it.
