Mike
Carruthers:
How do you view your own aging?
John Robbins:
When some people age they become increasingly bitter and cynical,
and they deteriorate - other people are happy and glowing and
luminous and celebrate. I think the reason that one goes one direction
and the other another, is mostly because of the choices we make.
John Robbins,
author of the book Healthy
at 100, studied four cultures around the world.
What they have
in common is that they are renowned for the health and longevity
of their elders. And I went to see well, what are the common
denominators?; and what I found was they all eat a diet that
is based on whole foods - they don't eat processed foods. And
they exercise a lot, not because they belong to gyms but because
their daily life requires that of them. And I think most importantly,
their relationships with one another are fabulous.
And relationships
- the connection to other people - is the often overlooked ingredient
to a long and healthy life.
Because the data
is very strong; that people who are chronically lonely, who
don't feel like their love matters to anybody - loneliness kills
them faster than cigarettes would. And when we form bonds of
connection in which we feel recognized and upheld, our immune
system goes into another level of functioning - our respiratory
system uplevels to another level of functioning and the result
of that is a much healthier life and a longer one.
