Attitude Isn't Everything II
Interview
with John Maxwell, author of The
Difference Maker
|
Mike
Carruthers:
Maintaining a good attitude takes effort.
John Maxwell:
And the reason why is there's no such thing as a permanent
good attitude; my attitude needs to continually be adjusted.
John Maxwell,
author of the book The
Difference Maker: Making Your Attitude Your Greatest Asset...
So, I have to
understand that every day, I have fresh challenges. Every day
I'm going to have some difficulties come my way - problems -
and so I'm going to have to every day manage my attitude.
And managing
your attitude, says John, starts by being conscious of it.
Every morning
I do an attitude adjustment. I say things like, "Traffic's
going to be a little difficult. I'm going to meet with people
today and not all my meetings are not going to go like I want
them to go. Someone's going to say "no" when I want
them to say "yes"." And so therefore when that
happens to me, it's not final and that's been a huge help to
me. Second thing I do, is at the end of the day I review my
day. You see experience isn't the best teacher, Mike; evaluated
experience is the best teacher. Only people who evaluate what
they go through - and that are willing to change it - do things
get better for them.
And preparing
for the next day is a lot better than repairing a bad day.
And every day,
Mike, people are either preparing or repairing. And if I'm repairing,
I'm trying to fix something I did wrong yesterday. If I'm preparing,
I'm getting ready to guarantee tomorrow's success. There's a
world of difference between those two kinds of people and it's
almost always the attitude that makes the difference.
