Flea Market Tips
Interview
with Terry Kovel, co-host of HGTV's
"Flea Market Finds with the Kovels"
Mike
Carruthers:
Can you still go to a flea market and uncover some real finds?
Apparently so, if you keep in mind that…
Terry
Kovel:
…dealers have to buy and sell a lot of stuff to make money,
so they can't know everything. And if you go into a booth for
someone that sells furniture and they have some pottery and
porcelain, you may get a buy.
Terry Kovel,
host of "Flea
Market Finds" on HGTV.
Sometimes
furniture that is very large can be had as a bargain, almost
anywhere because not everyone can put something that's more
than 8 feet tall in their house. You can get a buy in costume
jewelry almost anywhere if you really know what you're looking
at because there's so much to know in there and it's a relatively
new collectible. A lot of the dealers just don't know. The best
tricks, I think, are just common sense; that is, that you will
get a better price for a group of items because the dealer wants
to sell. You will get a better price on large items at the end
of a show because they don't want to pack it up and take it
home, like a dining room table.
Should you
ever pay asking price at a flea market?
Well,
if you want it enough, but no dealer really expects you to at
a flea market. The question to ask is "Is that the best
you can do?" or "Gee, I love it, but I really don't
want to spend that much" or, "If I buy five items
in your booth, can I get a better price?"
Tomorrow,
what's in your attic that might be valuable. I'm Mike Carruthers
and that's "Something You Should Know."
