Collectibles You May Own
Interview
with Terry Kovel, co-host of HGTV's
"Flea Market Finds with the Kovels"
Mike
Carruthers:
There's a pretty good chance that stuff laying around in your
attic or garage is worth money.
Terry
Kovel:
An ashtray, old golf clubs, the can that the golf balls came
in, Halloween, anything that's Halloween-an old costume, an
old mask.
Terry Kovel,
co-host of "Flea
Market Finds" on HGTV, says stuff from the 60s and
70s is valuable.
Textiles,
tablecloths, all kinds of embroidered dishtowels, things that
you could barely give away ten years ago, little things are
doing well. Plastic and pottery, salt and pepper shakers. I
was surprised that plastic Easter bunny containers for candy
are selling for $100.
Old tools,
purses, Christmas decorations have all become collectible and
are now worth money. Terry says the online auction Ebay
has had an impact on all of this.
In some
ways, it's hurt and in some ways, it's helped. A lot of people
are selling their own things online now, but similarly, a lot
of dealers are buying things online now that they would have
had trouble to find, and the prices on Ebay have dropped about
30% on the retail this year because everyone's going into the
attic and digging stuff out. The entire used book business has
been stood on its head because it turns out that rarities are
common and common ones are rarities, so that's a whole industry
that's had to relearn things since the internet came along.
