Carruthers:
In order to be successful, it’s important to do something you love.
Stewart Emery:
If you don’t do what you love, you’ll be beaten by somebody who does in the modern world.
Stewart Emery, co-author of the book Success Built to Last , has studied a lot of very successful people.
What they have in common is they’ve all been clear about what matters to them. They’re clear about the why they’re doing it – and everything else seems to follow them. And they just said, “Doors open as if by magic.”
If you’re not clear about what it is that you love, listen to what Stewart calls that "silent scream".
There’s this little inner voice that is screaming to get out, that we’ve locked in the basement because our parents said that doesn’t make any sense. “Don’t become a musician, you’ll never make any money.” You’ve got to just stop the noise every now and again and notice that little scream inside and then do something about it.
Another important distinction, says Stewart, is that successful people make a lot of mistakes. In fact, they have more failures than successes.
If you listen and talk about their mistakes - if you didn’t know better, you’d think they were losers. But they learned to learn from their mistakes. That was a big thing I got out of doing the book. I don’t know about you out there listening, but I have been beating myself up all my life for the mistakes I’ve made. And you know what I learned? - I learned that I didn’t make enough mistakes quick enough and I didn’t always make new mistakes. These people say, “Make mistakes, just make new mistakes.”
