Using Technology Wisely
Interview
with Vince Poscente, author of the book The
Age of Speed

Mike
Carruthers:
Technology is supposed to make us more efficient and buy us more
time to do the things we want to do - but many people don't feel
that way.
Vince Poscente:
Feeling like they're out of control, they feel like their technology
is their taskmaster and they're feeling overwhelmed and they
want to just get off, and they want to know the answer - and
the answer is making different choices.
Vince Poscente,
author of the book The
Age of Speed…
You've got to
stare in the mirror and say, "Wait a minute, am I making
the right choices to have a quality of life that isn't putting
me underwater - making me feel like I'm literally treading with
my nose just above the surface?" So the great shake-out
is really understanding if we are taking control of our lives
or is all of this taking control of us?
When used right,
technology can make you more efficient and buy you more time.
But it's what you choose to do with that time that's important.
If we fill that
extra time with busy work - it's not the technology's fault,
it's our fault. You have to ask, "Where am I going to draw
the line and be responsible for this precious thing called my
time?"
In our desire
to get more things done quicker, many of us multi-task…
Multi-tasking
is something that actually slows us down because it decreases
efficiency, decreases productivity and then you may have to
go back and do it over again or do it better. So if somebody
walks into your office or you get a phone call and you're doing
an email at the same time, then take one and stop the other.
