October 5, 2006:
Using Creativity To Solve Problems
Interview
with Fred Senn, author of Juicing The Orange |
Mike
Carruthers:
Finding solutions to problems in any organization today takes
creativity...
Fred Senn:
Creativity
is a rigorous team sport - it’s not somebody running into
a room saying, “Eureka I’ve got it.” It's a
team of smart people, each making the other person's ideas better.
Fred Senn, author of the book Juicing the Orange: How to Turn Creativity into a Powerful Business Advantage, says an important key to solving any problem is to start from scratch.
When you're solving a problem, step way back
and make sure that you have defined it in a new fresh way. And
the second principle is, demand a ruthlessly simple definition
of that problem. So many smart people make things so complex,
they can’t solve them. So you remember when James Carville
went into Clinton headquarters in 1992 and wrote "it's
the economy stupid" on the white board - that's the kind
of ruthlessly simple definition of a problem that we're looking
for.
If you’ve never considered creativity as way to solve problems in your organization, Fred says the good news is…
Most organizations are more creative than they think they are. And it means, taking a hard look at your hierarchy and seeing if you can flatten it out so everybody feels as if their voice is being heard -
...because great ideas are usually the result
of collaboration.
There are just not enough brilliant dictators like Steven Jobs around. The rest of us are going to have to team up with smart people from other disciplines - and team up early.
