When you buy a policy direct from a carrier for yourself or your family, under federal law your premium cannot be raised for illness or claims history. That means that no matter how sick you get, they're stuck with you at the same premium base rate they quoted you when they took you.

Not everyone can qualify to buy health insurance because of pre-existing conditions. But for those who can, and Paul says that's about 90% of the population, you'll be surprised to find how cheap it now is.

Until right now, Fall 2005, individual family health insurance was almost twice as expensive and you had to pay for it yourself. That's no longer true. Individual family health insurance you can buy now and your employer can reimburse you for it tax-free in lieu of participating in their employer plan.

Premiums vary from state to state, but…

On a national average, the average health insurance premium if you buy it yourself directly for a high deductible health savings policy is $92 a month. And for a family of four with parents in their late thirties it's about $290 a month.
