Mike
Carruthers:
Last year in 2004 about a million families filed medical bankruptcy.
Paul Zane
Pilzer:
That's bankruptcy not because of overspending, credit cards…
solely because of a medical bill. Of those one million families
more than 75% owned a home and had employer health insurance
when they became ill.
Paul Zane Pilzer,
author of the book, The
New Health Insurance Solution…
When they became
ill the first thing they lost was their job. When they lost
their job they lost their health insurance and could no longer
pay their medical bills.
But things have
changed in 2005. You can now buy affordable health insurance
for you and your family in every state, if you qualify. Your
employer can reimburse you but it's yours to keep if you leave
your job. But what if you don't qualify because of a pre-existing
condition?
All states now
have a new type of health insurance that they're required to
offer you under federal law but they're not telling you. It's
called state guaranteed coverage for people with medical conditions.
This is huge
news. It's brand new and you're not hearing about it because,
Paul says, states don't want the burden of paying your health
insurance premium.
We've always
had state coverage for poor people called Medicaid. We've always
had state coverage for old people called Medicare. Starting
2005 all states are required under a 1996 law, that they must
give health insurance (generally it's always Blue Cross/Blue
Shield real quality health insurance) to people who have been
rejected for health insurance because of pre-existing conditions.
