Mike
Carruthers:
Most of us read a lot slower than we need to. Why?
Edward Droge:
When we learn how to read, we are looking at each word one at
a time. When we're being tested by our teachers they're asking
us to read aloud, and we can only read one word at a time.
Ed Droge, author
of the book, Your
Intelligence Makeover…
That means if
there are twelve words on a line your eye makes twelve eye stops.
What we're capable of doing is seeing a lot more than that.
If you just think about it, if you go to the zoo and you look
at the elephant you can see the whole elephant. So, you can't
convince me that you can't see more than just a little fraction
of an inch of a word on a page. But what you have to do is train
yourself. If you saw two words at a time your eyes would make
six eye stops and theoretically you've doubled your reading
speed right there. And you can do this in a relatively short
amount of time.
Ever have trouble
remembering people's names right after you meet them? Well,
Ed says, if you repeat the name out loud you'll have a better
chance of remembering it. Also…
Try to envision
that persons name on the persons face. For example, if the persons
name is Carol you might think of a caroler. Either the person
that you're talking to named Carol becomes that, or you just
have this little image- maybe a cartoon image of maybe a caroler
standing on her head. Because, in fact the crazier it is, the
easier it is for you to remember.
Tomorrow, how
to be a better writer, instantly. I'm Mike Carruthers and that's
Something You Should Know.
