Mike
Carruthers: Saving money in small ways can add up over time.
And one way to start saving right away… Sharon
Frank: Buy drug items in the drug store and buy grocery items in
the grocery store. You're definitely going to pay more if you start buying toothpaste
and items like that in the supermarket instead of the drug store. Sharon
Frank of Good Housekeeping, which has just published the book, Good
Deals and Smart Steals, says when you go grocery shopping… Think
about what you really need and then ignore the shelves that are at eye level because
the stores are pretty smart. They know the things that are at eye level are the
things that you're most likely to purchase. Don't buy those things, look up, look
low, look around make sure you're buying what you really need. You know your mother
was right don't shop when you're hungry. If you're hungry everything looks attractive.
When you're shopping
for big-ticket items, Sharon says the Internet can help. And
we encourage people to go to sites like shopzilla.com
or shopping.com, which can give you comparisons
of prices. Take advantage of stores that offer free shipping but check around
because sometimes shipping is free but the price is higher. And
in today's economy there's nothing wrong with trying to negotiate a lower price. And
that's something that people aren't aware of - you can negotiate, especially on
big-ticket items. So if the salesperson feels that you're not going to make the
purchase if they don't offer you a better price or offer you an extra, they're
going to negotiate. And it doesn't hurt to ask. At
