Mike
Carruthers: What makes people look older than their actual
years? Stress is a big culprit. Dr.
Amy Wechsler: The fastest growing segments in the anti-aging category
are twenty-year-olds. When I was in my twenties I wouldn't think of buying an
anti-aging product but twenty-year-olds are buying them. I think because everyone's
so stressed out and they are starting to see all these wrinkles. Dr.
Amy Wechsler, author of the book The
Mind-Beauty Connection, is a dermatologist and psychiatrist and she says the
connection between stress and premature aging is clear. When
we're stressed, chronically stressed (which means more than just a day but simply
weeks or months) the brain makes a lot of cortisol (which is that stress hormone)
and it breaks down collagen and breaking down collagen causes wrinkles. Also cortisol
causes breakouts and dry, itchy skin. This
type of damage is reversible, says Dr. Wechsler. If you reduce the stress in your
life and also if you get enough sleep. If
you just take sleep for example; people who are sleep-deprived for a week only,
look four years older (and there's a good study on that) and that's just sleep. Everyone
should use a moisturizer on their skin and Dr. Wechsler has secret. Safflower
oil… Which is a
cooking oil. It has in it the same exact oil that our skin makes but that we make
less of when we get older. After a shower, just apply some safflower oil as a
moisturizer - it absorbs, it's clear and odorless. And in a couple of days from
using safflower oil the skin is so soft and feels better - looks better.
