Mike
Carruthers:
Why
is it almost impossible to find grape flavored ice cream?
David Feldman:
Basically the taste of grape is
so bland that the milk or the cream overpowers it. The only way
that they can make grape ice cream that has any grape taste is
by using artificial flavors and big ice cream companies don't
want to do that.
David Feldman
author of the book, Why
Do Pirates Love Parrots? explains why airplane seats never
seem to line up with the windows.
You're basically
talking about two different industries - the airplane makers
and the airlines. For example American Airlines has recently
downsized the amount of room for legroom and they put in more
seats. So, they're constantly reshuffling the configuration
of the actual rows. So, very often you end up with the windows
not aligning with the seats properly.
And why is Friday
the 13th considered unlucky?
Actually people
didn't think of "13" as unlucky until the Great Plague
of 1665 in England. For some reason there was a superstition
that if 13 people sat at the same table that one of them would
die. It didn't really catch on in the United States until the
20th Century. There was a novel and then later a movie called
Friday the 13th -and I'm not referring to the Jason movies of
recent times - it was, of all things, released in 1913 - it
was a big best seller and ever since then there's been superstitions
about "13" being unlucky.
