Mike
Carruthers:
Do you know the difference between appreciation and gratitude?
Noelle Nelson:
Gratitude is something you do after the fact. Somebody does
something nice or says something nice and you feel grateful-
and that's a wonderful and beautiful thing.
Noelle Nelson,
author of the book, The
Power Of Appreciation in Business.
Appreciation
is something you do before the fact. In other words, you think
actively about the value of a person or thing before they've
done something nice or something desirable. So, for example:
you catch an employee in the act of doing something right. So,
you don't sit around and wait for something to be completed
or something nice to be done, to say, " Great job."
You actually, actively notice and recognize value all the way
along.
Noelle says it's
been proven that creating a culture of appreciation in any business
is good for the bottom line. But, there's more…
It actually has
huge benefits to you when you're doing the appreciating. What's
been demonstrated is that your heart rate smoothes out and improves
when you are doing the appreciating. Your brain actually functions
much better when you are doing the appreciating.
And appreciation
can work wonders in other parts of your life.
Matter of fact
if you have a troubled relationship and you want to turn it
around. Just start valuing everything and everybody about your
partner and your relationship. And I promise you, because I've
seen it done so many times, your relationship will become beautiful-
try it!
