Mike
Carruthers:
As
you might imagine, Halloween is the number one candy holiday.
Susan Fussell:
With sales of just over 2 billion
dollars it followed in order by Easter, Christmas and Valentines
Day.
Susan Fussell,
Spokesperson for the National
Confectioners Association…
About 93% of
children in the U.S. will go trick or treating this year. Children
say that bite sized chocolate candies are their favorite type
of candy to receive in trick or treat bags about 76% want to
get chocolate candies. That's followed by bite sized non-chocolate
candies, things like caramels and licorice and of course a good
percentage of children like to get gum.
Candy corn is
the one candy that is most associated with Halloween.
And certainly
it's difficult to find candy corn at other times of the year.
October 30th is National Candy Corn Day and we're making a lot
of it about. 35 million pounds of candy corn will be produced
this year. That's about 9 billion pieces. That's enough to go
around the moon about 4 times if you laid each piece end to
end.
And the most
popular Halloween candies?
The most popular
candies at Halloween are the snack size or bite size versions
of the candies that are popular all year long. So, the miniature
candy bars, miniature rolls of lifesavers, miniature Hershey
bars - the Hershey miniatures, Reese's cups, Baby Ruth, Snickers,
things like that.
