II Interview
with Julie Morgenstern, author of the book, Making
Work Work Mike
Carruthers: Here's a great way to be more productive at work.
Julie
Morgenstern:
Stop checking email for the first hour of the day just
completely avoid email.
Employment
consultant Julie Morgenstern, author of the book, Making
Work Work… Email
steals your energy and it's nothing but a bunch of interruptions. So instead spend
your first hour completely email free and focus on that one task that if you got
it done today you'd feel the greatest sense of relief or satisfaction. And it
really creates an incredible kick-start to your day when you feel in charge. It
might sound counter-intuitive says Julie but the people who are the most productive
at work… Are
the ones that put tremendous thought and care to their time off. They know what's
going to refresh and restore them, they plan their evenings, they plan their weekends.
And it doesn't mean that they're busy all weekend they might plan to just sleep
all weekend but they plan it and it has the effect of boosting your performance
during the week. And
Julie says another way to get more done at work is to actually leave a half an
hour earlier than usual. It
has the effect of being on deadline, when you're on deadline you handle interruptions
in a completely different way. When you're on deadline you don't procrastinate
you don't get caught up in perfectionism. I've never seen this fail. People get
more done when they leave thirty minutes earlier than if they leave at their regular
time everyday. At
