Mike
Carruthers:
Coca-Cola. It's become more than just a soft drink-it's a
piece of Americana.
Michael Karl
Witzel:
It all started way back in 1886. The first glass of Coca-Cola
was served at Jacob's Pharmacy and that was in Atlanta, Georgia.
Michael Witzel,
author of the book
The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola.
And the man responsible
for the original syrup, the formula, was John Spitz Pemberton,
and he was a pharmacist. He came up with different concoctions
and Coca-Cola really was his best.
And it's true
that Coca-Cola once contained cocaine.
There was cocaine
in Coca-Cola in the early days and that's why the combination
of the cocaine and caffeine gave such a really good pick-me-up.
By 1906, though, every trace of cocaine was removed.
One of the amazing
parts of the Coca-Cola story is the valuable collectibles.
Of course there's
the vintage calendar girl images and calendars that really kicked
it all off, way back when. There's trays, clocks, blotters,
bottles. Anything and everything you could think of, you can
find with the Coca-Cola logo on it.
And the formula
for Coca-Cola is very top-secret.
It supposedly
resides inside a special security vault at the Trust Company
of Georgia, and no one can really go in there and view the document
without the board's permission.
