Mike
Carruthers:
As we head into another winter of high-energy costs you might
be surprised by some of the ways you may be wasting energy.
Jennifer Thorne
Amann:
Your home entertainment system uses a lot of energy and we're
finding today that many of today's home electronic setups can
use as much energy as a refrigerator - between new television
sets, satellite or cable boxes.
Jennifer Amann,
author of the
Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings…
One of the main
ways that you can cut that is to turn off appliances when they're
not being used. Also, think a little bit more when you're in
the market for a new TV set. There are real differences in their
energy consumption. For the most part LCD TV's are more efficient
than plasma screens.
Many of us leave
our computers on all the time.
I think there's
a myth out there that it uses more energy to boot up a computer
than it does to run it for an extended period of time - that's
not really true. So, if you're going to be away from your computer
for more than an hour or two it makes a lot of sense to go ahead
and shut down.
It's going to
cost you more to heat your house this winter. In some cases
a lot more so Jennifer recommends…
Go around on
a nice breezy fall day with a stick of incense and look and
see around your doors and windows where you're getting a draft.
Go out to the hardware store you can spend thirty-five dollars
and pick up a whole range of weather stripping, calking and
you'll really make a significant impact on your energy bills.
Tomorrow, discover
more ways you may be wasting energy - I'm Mike Carruthers and
that's Something You Should Know.
