Problems With Herbal Medications
Interview
with Dr. Michael Roizen, author of
You the Smart Patient
|
Mike
Carruthers:
Alternative
and herbal medications have become very popular in this country
and some of them seem to work very well, however…
Dr. Michael Roizen:
There's a real problem with alternative
medicines and that is the law that allows them says (and I'm
not even paraphrasing very much, this is the second line of
the second paragraph) "What is in the bottle may or may
not be on the label and what is on the label may or may not
be on the bottle."
Dr. Michael Roizen,
author of the book You
the Smart Patient, says for example the herb hoodia is sold
in this country as a weight loss supplement.
More hoodia has
been sold, was sold in the United States by a factor of ten
than has ever been made, that is in the United States we sold
ten times the hoodia that has ever been grown in the world.
Obviously at least 90% of the hoodia sold in the United States
was fake.
Glucosamine and
Chondroitin Sulfate is an alternative supplement people take
for healthy joints.
Thirty of the
thirty-three preparations that have been tested found to have
less than 10% of the Glucosamine or Chondroitin Sulfate in it.
What are the ones that have been tested and found repeatedly
to have good stuff in it? - it's Osteobiflex, Cosamin ds and
it's Triple Flex. And just to be clear, I have no financial
interest in any of these companies, but those are the ones that
had reliable stuff in them.
