Having a job isn’t what it used
to be.

The day that you get hired you
should be prepared to be fire. You don’t stick around for thirty-five
years and collect the gold watch anymore.
Harvey
MacKay, author of the best selling book, Swim with the Sharks,
has a new book out called, We
Got Fired!
Every
person thirty years of age or under, there’s a ninety percent
probability you’re going to lose your job in the next twenty
years - you’ll be fired. Number two; the average college graduate
this year will have twelve to fourteen different job changes
in his or her career.
So,
what do you do to prepare to be fired? Well, it’s old advice
but Harvey says it’s still true today...
You
have to start building your network within that industry. Seventy
percent of all jobs are found through networking. So, if the
pink slip does come for any reason whatsoever, you might want
to go to a competitor. You’ve built up some goodwill in your
industry by networking, by having some contacts.
And
very often getting fired does have a silver lining.
They
did a study in New York City - they went out and got four hundred
people that were today a success and were not a success years
ago. And what was the reason they became a success? Ninety percent
of those four hundred people were thrown out of their jobs unexpectedly.
They all said being thrown out of work was the best thing that
ever happened to them.
