Holiday Toy Shopping 2007 II

Mike
Carruthers:
When you're buying toys for the kids this holiday season think
in terms of what they're interested in, not what you think they
should be interested in.
Marianne Szymanski:
If you buy your child a sports toy because maybe their throw
isn't the best and you want to practice it - that's great. But
if a child doesn't have interest in this and you really have
to push it, you're wasting your money because the child's not
ready to play with that toy.
Marianne Szymanski
of Toytips.com and publisher
of Toy Tips magazine, says one of her favorite toys this year
for young kids are building blocks made by a company called
Kapla.
They're made in
Germany. And the reason I like those is because they're just
unfinished wooden blocks - and they're so imaginative. But those
just kind of stood out because they're just the old fashioned
basic wooden block and when we introduced those in focus groups
kids just loved them. It's the kind of toy you'll just sit there
and play with over and over again.
Robotic toys
are very popular this year and Marianne says…
There's one that
stands out, it's made by Woo Wee and it's a dragonfly. And it's
different because it's very light, it's made out of Styrofoam
and the direction on it is great. You can hover it, you can
fly it around the room (I don't recommend these to be used inside
the house very often, but in the winter months they probably
will) but in that case if it falls, because it's made of Styrofoam
it won't break very easy - but it's fun.
