Mike Carruthers:
Our homes are full of clutter. Katherine
Gibson:
In fact the average in America has about 350,000 possessions
in their house.
Katherine
Gibson, author of the book, Unclutter
Your Life, says all this stuff in your home has an impact
on your mental health.
Too many
things in a room can make us feel claustrophobic. They can make
use feel confused, and they can certainly make us feel unsettled.
We lose the sense of calm we should have. Our homes should be
welcoming and restful, and the things that don’t belong in there
are the things that don’t make us feel that way.
Of course getting
rid of clutter can be an overwhelming task.
Well
there are a couple of ways that people can handle this problem.
The
very simple one is what I call the Ten-Minute Toss - to take
ten minutes everyday and to fill that box for ten minutes, and
put in things there that you don’t use.
Of
course, the part two of that is to take that box of clutter,
and take it out of the house because clutter has a habit of
creeping back into our lives if we don’t get rid of it.
Now
if you find you’re having difficulty with that you could get
yourself a clutter buster friend, a buddy that will come over
and help you.
And
it’s also very much like peeling an onion, I think that we un-clutter
in layers. We can go through a room we can take certain things
away we come back and revisit it and we notice they’re other
things we can let go of and that continues.
