Mike Carruthers:
Would you say that at your job
you are indispensable? Alan
Axelrod:
Well, if you don’t make yourself
indispensable you will be dispensed with.
Alan Axelrod,
author of the book, Office
Superman… The
approach is to do what a superhero does which is take the focus
off himself and put it on others. Concentrate on how you can
satisfy your customer. And by customer, I don’t just mean the
people outside of your company you may do business with, but
everyone within business that you come into contact with. And
it’s your job to serve that customer, to create satisfaction.
People
who put the focus on their own needs in business don’t usually
get very far.
Think
about the last time you bought a new car. I can guarantee you
that the salesman pitch did not emphasize the fact that he needs
to make this sale this month or he can’t pay his mortgage. He
didn’t come up to you and say, "Look. You know you gotta
buy this car from me because I’m running out of money, and I
need the commission." But, what he did is focus on how
that car can serve your needs best, how that car is a great
value for you. And the whole trick to that is that what you
end up doing is creating an environment that ultimately does
focus on you, and environment that does see you as indispensable.
