Saving Money By Simply Asking
Interview
with Barbara Rollin, author of the book Ask!

Mike
Carruthers:
If you want to save money, sometimes all you have to do is ask.
Barbara Rollin:
Things like rental cars, hotels… they will always give you a discount.

book, Ask!
The Revolutionary New Guide to Total Customer Satisfaction.
Another thing
is asking to have fees waived. Anytime I hear the word "fee",
I think, "waive." Banks will waive fees. Airlines
- you're changing your flights, $50 fee, $75 fee… "I wonder
if you can waive that fee for me?" 50% of the time they
say yes.
If you ask, most
credit card companies will lower the interest rate you pay.
My editor in
fact, was thrilled when she got the book because she called
her credit card company and they lowered her interest rate from
19% to 11%. And they'll do this because they know you could
easily switch your balance.
The trick, says
Barbara, is to ask nicely. But you don't have to be a wimp.
I had a situation
recently where a clerk was very offensive with me…"No,
we can't do that!" And she thought I had quite a lot of
nerve. So I said, "I'd like the name and number of your
supervisor." And she said, "You can call but it won't
help." Well I called the supervisor. They were so apologetic
and sent me a coupon for $25.
