Mike
Carruthers:
The Internet has changed the way a lot of people look for jobs.
There are now big job boards like Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com
that contain thousands and thousands of jobs.
Martin Yate:
In fact, companies hire more people from the smaller, niche
job boards than they do from the majors. This may sound surprising.
Employment expert,
Martin Yate, author of the book, Knock
'Em Dead 2006…
The Internet
led to employers getting buried in avalanches of resumes, which
creates problems in sorting through them. Lets say we were looking
for an accountant. By advertising on Accountants.com the employer
gets fewer response but better qualified responses.
And there's another
interesting trend in the job-hunting world.
Corporations
are now creating alumni networks. They now are interested in
hiring ex-employees back. They're offering incentives to ex-employees
and current employees to refer people to them. All colleges,
whether it's Harvard or whether it's Acme Welding, they all
have alumni networks. If you're joining an alumni network it
gets you introductions and you can get a couple of minutes of
anyone's time. "Mike, we haven't spoken together but we
were both at Stamford University in the 70's I need some advice
can you spare me a moment." It's the old boy, old girl
network updated into the Internet age.
