Mike
Carruthers:
Is there some big passionate goal you have like losing weight,
or going back to school, getting another job- but it seems like
such a monumental task, you put it off. Well, ask yourself this
question...
Al Secunda:
Are you willing to commit to doing 15 seconds a day about something
you claim to be passionate about?
Al Secunda, author
of the book, The
15 Second Principle says committing to 15 seconds is magical
because of course you can't do anything in 15 seconds.
But, you can
get started. And it's zero to one, it's the first pushup, just
going zero to one, picking up the musical instrument or touching
the piano for 15 seconds. So, it's really zero to one is where
the mastery is because once we're in motion down on the floor
doing one pushup the second pushup is really not too frightening
or too painful.
You can commit
to anything for 15 seconds and Al says really, really give yourself
permission to bail out after 15 seconds. For example going to
the gym…
Just showing
up and committing that you are going to at least enter the environment.
And if it's that painful you can turn around and leave but it
never is, it's always the fear of the work out- it's never the
work out. And it works, don't ask me why it works- you can get
a brilliant psychologist on and interview him or her and they
can tell you- but it's a game that definitely works.
