Buying the Right Toys for Christmas
Interview
with Stevanne Auerbach, Ph.D., author of Dr.
Toy's Smart Play
Mike
Carruthers:
With all the toys available today, how do you know what to get
a child for the holidays? Well, one place to start is the classics.
Dr.
Stevanne Auerbach:
Well, there's everything from Easy Bake Ovens to Cabbage
Patch dolls to yo-yos and hula-hoops, Monopoly and Scrabble…
Dr. Stevanne
Auerbach, also known as Dr. Toy.
You don't
want to miss any of the wonderful classic toys that you played
with. They're great for everybody, and a game of checkers or
chess is something that the whole family can enjoy together.
Dr. Toy
also recommends that you simply ask your child what they want…
…because
you'll learn a lot about what their own preferences are. Rather
than my telling you what toy they might like, I'd rather see
your child tell you what they like. But they should get one
thing, at least, that they really want, even though you might
buy some other things that they'll have fun with and probably
last a lot longer.
And it's
important to have toys parents can play with with their children.
And remember
that the parent is the child's first big toy. So you've got
to play with your child, you've got to get down on the floor
and build and create and have fun with them. Make play part
of everyday life. And also, I think adults should buy a toy
for themselves. I think we all need to play more.
Dr.
Toy's website is a wealth of information on the subject.
