Carruthers:
I'm sure you've seen this; married couples where the man and woman
seem to have utter contempt for each other.
Larry Bilotta:
Once you have contempt you say, "I am above; you are below,
I am better, you are worse."
Marriage coach

Each Others Needs…
So if both the
man and wife have contempt for each other, they're going to
be having this attitude pretty much every day - I am above you
are below. Well, no relationship can withstand that, it's more
lethal than resentment. You see resentment is just I'm mad at
you but contempt says I am above and you are below.
It happens in
so many marriages, says Larry, and think about it - this is
the perfect prescription for a failed marriage. Marry someone
because you love them…
And then tell
them they're wrong, tell them that they're not valuable, tell
them that they're making mistakes, tell them to stop doing this
or start doing that. Guess what's going to happen? You're going
to produce a divorce.
Larry says, it's
absolutely critical that married couples understand different
needs men and women have in a marriage.
Men have two
needs; one is for sexual intimacy and the other is just for
respect. And women have two needs: emotional security and financial
security. But what's important about these needs is everybody's
version, all the men's version of their two, are expressed differently.
All the versions of women's are expressed differently.
