December 8, 2006:
Gender Differences In The Brain
Interview with Michael Gurian, author of What Could He Be Thinking

Mike Carruthers:
Biologically, the male and female brain work very differently.

Michael Gurian:

For instance, the male brain produces more sexual fantasies than the female brain. The female brain tends to produce more romantic fantasies.

Michael Gurian, author of the book What Could He Be Thinking?

Males tend to commit themselves to a mate later for a number of biological reasons. Boys and men tend to have a more immediate relationship with spatial, mechanical stuff - you know that's why boys tend to play video games, girls don't.

Now the reason that women seem to remember things better than men is also biological, and has to do with the hippocampus.

Now hippocampus is this little part of the brain where we do a lot of memory storage. The female hippocampus is about ten percent larger. There are also more pathways to that memory storage from the sensory centers, so when a man and woman, they've been married let's say twenty years, and suddenly she brings up something that happened twenty years ago, and she remembers the sensual stuff - she remembers the color of the tablecloth, she also will remember what was said. Most guys are going to say, "What? Really? Did I say that? I don't remember the tablecloth." Well that is a brain difference.

Men and women, says Michael, need to understand these differences a lot better.

My wife actually jokes with me about it. She says when her women friends get together; they've got men all figured out. Then when they try to get the guy to let's say, clean the house, it's just this blank wall again. "How come I can't reach him? You know, I know I've got him figured out…" Well, I don't think women actually have men figured out.
