Mike
Carruthers:
Everyone wants a safe holiday season, so here are a few things
to consider that you might not have thought of.
Alison Rhodes:
Halogen lamps are one of the biggest causes of fires in a home.
A halogen lamp can ignite a drape, a bedspread instantly - so
if you have a halogen lamp in the house, get rid of it.
Alison Rhodes,
Founder of thesafetymom.com…
We did something
with court TV a few years ago and we were in a lab where we
demonstrated if a halogen lamp tips over onto curtains or onto
any sort of bedspread, it can ignite instantly.
Carbon monoxide
detectors are also important, says Alison.
Because this
is a silent killer for children especially - so you need to
make sure that you have (especially with your home being more
closed up in the winter) carbon monoxide detectors in your basement
level and outside every bedroom in your home. You also need
to make sure (you're going to be having heaters on) those floor
board heaters are covered up so little hands aren't getting
burned.
And even if you
don't have small children, you may have some come visit during
the holidays so you may need to do a little baby proofing.
Because there
may be a dining room filled with china that you need to keep
your child out of. And if you're having a party in your home,
make sure you're locking away people's purses because kids could
get into purses where there's medication, makeup or other things
that could be toxic.
