Mike
Carruthers:
Appreciation
- it's an important element in any successful relationship...
Daniel Shapiro:
It is one of the key reasons
that marital couples last or divorce - it's one of the key reasons
that organizations last or divorce.
Daniel Shapiro,
co-author of the book Beyond
Reason…
By simply appreciating
someone, it has a tremendous impact on peoples' emotions. It
makes it easier to work together, to problem-solve together
and this is just as true in the business context as it is at
home.
In a conflict
or negotiation, Dan says, appreciation of the other side is
critical to a successful outcome.
"I can appreciate
your perspective very much; I can understand why someone thinks
the world is flat. When I look at a map and put it on the table
it looks flat, so I understand and I can see why someone thinks
that way." And at the same time I might say, "And
I disagree - here's my own thinking on the subject."
Dan Shapiro (who
is an authority on negotiation) says in any negotiation, the
person who comes out ahead knows that appreciation can be just
as important as money.
Money's a big
concern for all of us but we also want to feel high in status
and respected. We don't want to feel unfairly treated. Everybody
wants to feel appreciation, everybody wants to feel like they
have some say in decisions that go on and if you fail to recognize
these, watch out.
Tomorrow, putting
appreciation into practice - I'm Mike Carruthers and that's
Something You Should Know.
